"Think outside the box"
Our second assignments for principles of design was to recreate our self-portrait, we did not necessarily need to have a picture of our self but rather symbols or objects that represent us and what it means. We did however had to design a poster with a suitable art movement that represent us. I decided to choose street art as my art movement as I feel it represent me best because with street art, motivating factors such as liberty, self expressions and power, can show my nature as an artist. I also had to write a short summary of what the art is about and here it is : Graffiti is a form
of street art of which letters or images are scribbled or scrawled on public
property. There are many form of street art, but graffiti speaks to me the
most. This is probably because of the key motivating factors involved in it and
these factors are, fame, rebellion, self expression and freedom. Graffiti dates
back to ancient times, with examples going back to ancient Greece and Roman
Empire. In modern times, paint, particularly spray paint, and marker pens have
become the most commonly used graffiti materials. Graffiti consist of 3 main
styles and that is tagging, wildstyle and stickers. Tagging is the most basic
style of graffiti and also he quickest. It is the basic writing of the artist’s
name. Wildstyle is a more complex form of graffiti, involving interlocking
letters and arrows and connecting points. It is almost abstract to a
non-graffiti artist’s eyes as the letter merge into one another in an often
undecipherable manner. Last but not least are stickers. Sticker tags are commonly done on a blank
postage stickers or really anything with an adhesive on to it. Some critics
consider this lazy and a form of cheating, while others find that a good 5-10
minutes spent on a well design sticker is in no way lazy, especially when used
with other methods.
